Norfolk County Marker, Z-235

Formed in 1637, when New Norfolk County was divided into Upper Norfolk and Lower Norfolk. The name is that of an English county. The battle of Great Bridge, 1775, took place in this county, and in the waters near its shores the warship Merrimac performed her exploits in 1862.

Additional Information: Created in 1637 as Lower Norfolk County. Lower Norfolk County was split into Norfolk County and Princess Anne County in 1691. Norfolk County was merged into the independent city of Chesapeake on January 1, 1963. It is now known as Chesapeake. Princess Anne county was merged into the independent city of Virginia Beach on January 1, 1963. That area is now known as Virginia Beach.
