Two miles east is the Mattaponi Indian reservation, home of descendants of the great chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas. The reservation is situated on the Mattaponi River and is one of the oldest Indian reservations in the United States, existing since 1658. The Mattaponi tribe is governed by its chief and council and continues to exercise its laws and traditional customs.

Physical Description of Location: West Point, VA 23181. Located on King William Road (Rt. 30), 1.5 miles southeast of the junction of King William Road (Rt. 30) and State Route 641. Marker is on the left when traveling southeast on King William Road (Rt. 30).
