About Us
Markerhistory.com was founded to make Virginia historical highway markers conveniently accessible and relevant to a wider audience.
Access to the Markerhistory.com website is free, exclusive features include:
- History in Context Results – All search results are presented in chronological order, using the earliest event date on each marker. The resulting timeline provides a broader context to interpret the history of a topic or place.
- Related Marker Spider – While each marker provides its own story, each marker is also part of a broader story. Using our Related Marker Spider users can explore those connections in a single click.
- Comprehensive Coverage – Our database includes all currently erected, missing and approved, and yet to be erected Virginia historical highway markers, not just those for which we have an image. As of July 2011, our database includes 2,578 Virginia historical highway markers. Of those, we have digitally imaged 2,485. This number will continue to grow over time as missing markers are replaced and recently approved markers are installed.
- Alerts – You can subscribe to receive free, event based email alerts. Alerts are intended to keep you informed about the marker program and markerhistory.com
- Topic Search – To save you time if you are not quite sure where to start your search, we have alphabetically arranged key and commonly searched topics to get you started. The topics are links to tags from our Related Marker Spider, ensuring precise search results.
- Location Search – Single click access to all the markers in a specific county or independent city.
- Full Text Search – Perform keyword and phrase searches across all markers.
